Sinas tells men to obey gun rules

NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office director, Major General Debold M. Sinas has called on his men to strictly follow all gun rules specifically the words ‘consider every gun as loaded’ in the wake of the untimely death of a Malabon policeman as a result of a bullet accidentally discharged by one of his colleagues early morning yesterday.

Around 8:30 a.m. yesterday, Patrolman Mark Jim Prado was doing the ‘dry-fire routine’ inside their office when the gun went off hitting Staff Sergeant Christian Pacañor and Pat. Jhomel Blas.

The 36-year old SSgt. Pacañor sustained a gunshot wound on the left back portion of his body and died while being taken to the Ospital ng Malabon. On the other hand, Pat. Blas,26, was hit on the lower part of his head and was brought to the Ospital ng Tondo for medical treatment.

“We are saddened by the untimely death of our colleague, PSSg Pacañor and the wounding of Pat Blas. May this serve as a wake-up call for everyone to strictly observe the gun safety rules being implemented by the PNP. We all know that a single bullet can take away a precious life. Nonetheless, further investigation will be conducted and appropriate charges will be filed against the suspect,” said Maj. Gen. Sinas.

The initial investigation showed that Pat. Prado, assigned with the Northern Police District Mobile Force Battalion’s SWAT Rapid Deployment Company was having a ‘dry-fire routine’ using his PNP-issued caliber 9mm Canic semi-automatic pistol inside the DFMB Forward Base located at Block 45, Salmon Streetin Barangay Longos, Malabon City.

However, the gun went off when Prado squeezed its trigger, the bullet passing through the wooden wall and accidentally hitting the two victims.

Prado, a resident of Lower Bicutan, Taguig City was placed under the custody of the Malabon City Police Station while charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injury are being readied against him.
