THE House of Representatives lost its second lawmaker within the month month with the passing of Sorsogon Rep. Maria Bernadita “Ditas” Ramos, 76, who had earlier tested positive for coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19).
“It is with sadness that we just found out that our dear colleague, Rep. Maria Bernadita ‘Ditas’ Ramos of the 2nd district of Sorsogon has passed away,” House Deputy Majority Leader Xavier Jesus Romualdo told his colleagues during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The House of Representatives through Pangasinan Rep. Christopher de Venecia offered a prayer for the repose of the soul of Ramos.
The death of Ramos, which brings down to 299 the total number of lawmakers, prompted the House of Representatives to suspend the session until 3 p.m. of Wednesday to mourn her loss.
Last August 10, then Senior Citizens party-list Rep. Francisco “Jun” Datol died of complications brought about by COVID-19.
Ramos was the fifth fatality among 70 persons in the House of Representatives who were diagnosed with COVID-19 next to Datol and three House employees.
On Sunday, House Secretary General Atty. Jose Luis Montales announced that Ramos had tested positive for COVID-19.
“We received word that Congresswoman Ditas Ramos (2nd District, Sorsogon) has tested positive for COVID-19. She developed symptoms and got tested in the province. Let’s pray for the speedy and complete recovery of our confirmed cases,” Montales had said.
On record, Ramos was the ninth lawmaker who had caught COVID-19 after Datol, Deputy Speaker and Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman, Deputy Speaker and Agusan del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel, Sulu Rep. Samier Tan, Bulacan Rep. Henry Villarica, Cavite Rep. Luis Ferrer IV, Northern Samar Rep. Paul Daza, and 1-Pacman party-list Rep. Eric Pineda.Publication Source : People's Tonight
