WITH an aim to engage the youth in sports and healthy activities, Cabuyao City Team Unity will start its sports campaign in 2019 with the staging of Unity Cup Inter-Barangay basketball tournament starting on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Cabuyao City gym.
A total of 18 teams, led by powerhouse Barangay Niugan and darkhorse Barangay Banlic, will vie for the prestigious trophy in the tournament organized by Vice Mayor Jose Benson Garcia Aguilo, Association of Barangay Captain of Cabuyao president Dennis Hain and commissioner Dennis Lapastora,
Aguilo said the tournament will gather players, especially the youth of Cabuyao, to showcase their basketball skills.
“If they’re lucky enough, some of these players will be able to follow the footsteps of Barangay Butong superstar Beau Belga, who is now playing in PBA,” added Aguilo.
Councilors Jimbo Alcabasa, Toti Caringal, Kim Hain, Nani Himpisao, DonDon Hain, Wanda Alimagno, Banoy Hain and Danna Raymundo and JunJun Batalones support the event.
Alcabasa, a former basketball player-turned- public servant, said the tournament can help school leagues such as UAAP and NCAA, to discover new players.
The tournament is supported by Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) Region 4, headed by Leonardo “Ding” Andres.
