4 p.m--NU vs Ateneo (M)
ADAMSON posted its second straight win and later became alone on top as La Salle subdued National University in the UAAP men's basketball tournament yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Sean Manganti had a career-high 27 points as the Falcons overpowered University of the East, 90-76, while the Green Archers used their solid defense down the stretch to upend the upstart Bulldogs, 80-76.
Determined to prove that its season-opening 74-70 win over defending champion Ateneo was no fluke, Adamson overcame a flat start and needed a huge second quarter run to preserve its double-digit lead and eventually became the only undefeated team in the young season.
The Red Warriors were holding a 28-25 lead when Jerrick Ahanmisi's smooth triple capped the Falcons' 17-0 blast for a 42-28 advantage with 1:17 left in the first half.
Jonathan Espeleta's corner three gave Adamson the biggest lead of the game, 67-47, before UE, behind hotshot Alvin Pasaol, moved closer to 11 points thrice, the last was at 62-73, with 6:02 remaining.
The Falcons then put the game beyond recall at 84-66 with Manganti and Ahanmisi taking care of business to foil a late Warriors uprising.
“Well I guess, they’re accepting their respective roles as leaders. I mentioned to them that the young guys will follow them if they play well," said Adamson mentor Franz Pumaren, referring to Ahanmisi and Manganti.
After Justine Baltazar scored a jumper from a perfectly executed sideline inbound by Aljun Melecio to shatter the game's final deadlock at 76-76, La Salle made a huge defensive stop in the final 28 seconds as it forced NU a five-second inbound violation.
