Archers derail Tigers

October 23, 2019

LA SALLE derailed University of Santo Tomas’ march to the Final Four with an 80-79 win last night in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Rhenz Abando singlehandedly led the Growling Tigers’ fightback from a 71-80 hole, but that three-pointer in the final 1.5 seconds that could have sent the game into overtime was ruled as a two-pointer, as the La Union native stepped on the line.

Thankfully, the cushion was enough for the Green Archers to escape with the victory, as Brandon Bates and Jamie Malonzo stepped up.

“The players responded well. We will take this win,” said La Salle coach Gian Nazario.

La Salle’s win - the sixth in 12 matches - also put on hold  University of the Philippines’ progress to the Final Four.

The Fighting Maroons survived another close game, this time against also-ran National University, 80-77, solidifying their grip of the No. 2 spot.

UP rose to 8-4 as it gained a one-and-a-half game cushion in the race for the remaining twice-to-beat slot in the semifinals.

Earlier, Far Eastern University overcame second half struggles to boot Adamson out of the Final Four race with a 63-60 victory.
