‘Baste’ closes in F-F slot

SAN SEBASTIAN kept its one-game cushion over Mapua in the race for the remaining semifinals berth with an 85-82 conquest of Arellano University yesterday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

With the Cardinals hanging in the coattails, the Stags’ main men went on attack mode, with Allyn Bulanadi and RK Ilagan delivering in the payoff period as SSC posted its 10th win in 17 contests.

“Yeah we do have RK and Allyn, but they are so tired dahil hindi nag-step-up ang mga back-up nila. But since the willingness and heart na gustong manalo, I will always rely on my veterans,” said San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya.

Earlier, Mapua hung on for an 85-81 win over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta to stay alive in the Final Four race.

“Malaking bagay ito. Natutuwa ako at sa second round, unti-unti naming nakukuha iyong gusto naming mangyari,” said coach Randy Alcantara after the Cardinals, who started the season at 0-5, improved to 9-8 in fifth place.

“Lalo na matatapos na yung season, gusto naming umangat sa standings, ma-build up ang character at maibalik ko sa Mapua yung winning attitude. Unti-unti na. Kung hindi man kami umabot ng Final Four, at least, maka-nine or 10 wins this season,” he added.

The Cardinals’ second consecutive win put the Stags’ Final Four bid still hanging in the balance.

In the juniors division, San Sebastian fashioned out a 63-60 win over Arellano, to move closer in clinching a Final Four berth with a 10-7 card, while deposed champion Mapual prevailed over Perpetual Help, 74-61, in a no-bearing match for a 4-12 mark.
