THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) formally unveiled the new logos of the federation and the Gilas Pilipinas team on Wednesday in time for what would be a busy stretch for Philippine basketball in the second half of the year.

SBP President Al Panlilio was joined by PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial during the ceremony that preceded Game 4 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum between San Miguel and Magnolia.

While the SBP logo is just a ‘slight refresh’ from the original design first made when the federation was established in 2007, the Gilas logo has ‘more of a big change’ according to Panlilio.

“With the help of Cignal, what came out of our research is that the Gilas name is the most powerful. So what we really do is use the branding of Gilas across all the pillars,” said the SBP president.

“Yung Philippine eagles is still there, but yung rendition niya is quite different, with an emerging basketball, showing our love for the game obviously. And the italicized font illustrates the ball motion towards a bright future for the sport.”

The Gilas logo will be prominently in display during the various tournaments to be joined by the national teams for the rest of the year beginning with the 3x3 FIBA Asia Cup in Changsha, China later in the month.

Then in June, the Batang Gilas team led by Kai Sotto and AJ Edu, will see action in the FIBA U-19 World Cup in Greece.

Two months after, the Gilas Pilipinas team travels to Foshan, China for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

The Gilas women’s team will be seeing action in the FIBA Asia Cup tentatively set this September although the host country has yet to be identified.
