November 24, 2018

CHIANG Kai Shek College and Xavier School pulled off contrasting victories over their respective rivals in the first Tanduay Athletics-Metro Manila Tiong Lian Alumni 40 years old and above men’s basketball tournament at the Tanduay gym in Manila.

CKSC leaned on a strong finish to bring down erstwhile unbeaten Uno High School,  59-56, for its second straight win while Xavier played just hard enough to subdue St. Peter the Apostle School, 70-58, for a 2-1 slate  in the prestigious nine-team tournament featuring top 40 years old above players from the country’s leading Filipino-Chinese schools.

Eric Ang finished with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 15 minutes and Brian Ngo added 11 points and five rebounds for Chiang Kai Shek, which debuted with a 70-59  victory over St. Peter last Nov. 16.

Kim Ho Hui, the hero in CKSK's win over SPAS, with 26-point and 12-rebound double-double effort,  had eight points and 10 rebounds this time.

CJSC also got a big lift from Gary Gan  and Daniel Dagdag, who hit a pair of well-contested jumpers in the last 1:33; and Calvin Li, who split his free throws with  two seconds left for the final count.

John Erwin Cheng  carried the fight for Uno with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists while playing the most minutes with nearly 36 minutes.

Cassie Tan had 11 points and six renounds and  McRobert Dytiandu had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists in Uno's losing cause.

Later,  Xavier  rode on Rand Chu (20 points, 14 rebounds), Benedicto Coyuito ( 17 points, seven rebounds, four  assists), Fritz Dy (eight points) and Grech  Ho (11 rebounds) to beat St. Peter.

Xavier split its first two assignments,  losing to  Jubillee and winning over St. Peter.

The loss by St. Peter negated the efforts of  Kerby Chua, who had 18 points and 16 rebounds.

The event is organized by MMTL alumni president Christian Tan with Johny Tam as alumni operations head and Horacio Lim as the commissioner.

Event sponsor is Tanduay Athletics.
