BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare and Technological Institute of the Philippines completed the PBA D-League Foundation Cup semifinal round cast after eliminating their respective quarterfinal foes yesterday at the Paco Arena.
The Saints successfully made a return trip to the Final Four as they whitewashed Hyperwash, 180-117, in a record-setting game, while the Engineers turned back Black Mamba, 82-71.
In the best-of-three semifinals starting Thursday, BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare will take on Centro Escolar University, while TIP will play Marinerong Pilipino in the other pairing.
The Saints were hardly challenged by a Vipers side that offered a token resistance in a game that looked like a scrimmage.
BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare’s 180 points is now the new all-time scoring record, surpassing Hyperwash’s 144 in a six-point victory over McDavid-La Salle Araneta last Aug. 28.
For coach Steve Tiu, the real battle begins for the Saints against the Scorpions, runners-up in the previous conference, with veterans Alfred Batino and Hesed Gabo now included in the playoff roster.
“Happy ako na pumasok sa semis pero hindi kami na-push sa limit,” said Tiu after the lopsided quarterfinals contest.
BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare, which is unbeaten in seven games dating back from the eliminations, had 12 of its 14 players fielded in scoring in twin digits, with Chris Dumapig leading the way with 21 points to go with 12 rebounds.
The Saints’ 108 second half points also shattered the previous high of 95 for most points scored in a half, while the 60-point third quarter also broke the mark for most points in a quarter, which was 53 points prior to this game.
JR Cawaling paced the Vipers with 27 points while Lenmark Montilla chipped in 22 points and nine boards.
The Engineers turned to their reinforcements led by Reynaldo de Mesa and Junjun Bonsubre to help out big man Papa Ndiyaye in the second half to eliminate Black Mamba.
“It was fun to work with them. It’s a joy to see them work like that,” said TIP coach Potit de Vera.
