Dolphins bag crown

PHILIPPINE Christian University  added another feather to its cap by ruling the first Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL)-Pacquiao Youth Champs Trophy, beating Rizal Technological University, 78-64, at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong recently.

Handled by the father and son tandem of coach Loreto Tolentino and Elvis Tolentino, the Dolphins overcame a slow start  to beat the Blue Thunders in the closely-fought encounter.

Veterans Von Jovi Tambeling, Yves Sazon, Brent Palatao, Reyl Vasquez and Dexter Mescallado led the Dolphins’ offensive attack to frustrate a strong rally by the Blue Thunders.

Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) president Prof.Robert Milton Calo awarded the trophy to PCU, assisted by FESSAP State College Affair Allan Soria and NCR commissioner Nestor Macatuno.

PCU defeated University of Perpetual Help Jonelta System, 69-67, while RTU downed University of Rizal 75-63 in the crossover semifinals to arrrange the title showdown.

The Saints of coach Vic Escudero finished third place by defeating URS Giants, 65-55.

Actually, the Dolphins clinched the top spot in Manila- A leg with  three wins over Mapua (90-76), AIMS (71-60) and Trace College (97-73).

The Blue Thunders, on the other hand, topped the Manila-B  over TUP, City College of Malabon and PhilSCA.

The Saints captured the Laguna leg by beating AsiaTech, San Pablo College and San Pedro  Business Administration, while the  Giants topped the Rizal leg by beating University of Makati and Cainta Catholic College.

The other members of the team are Paolo Ramiro Bautista, Chester Saldua, Jexter Tolentino, Mark Edison Ordonez, Carl Kenneth Sumalacay, Mark DelaCruz, Christian Cardozo and Matt Gines.                      AA
