Fil-Am declares for NBA Draft

Filipino-American guard Remy Martin of Arizona State University has declared for the NBA Rookie Draft.

Martin, a junior guard, made the announcement via Instagram where he said: "Early mornings to late nights, I did everything I could for the front of the jersey."

He averaged 19.1 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds for the Sun Devils as a junior. He led Arizona State to the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 tournament, where they would have played against Washington State.

However, the game -- and the NCAA tournament -- was eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Starting from a young age, I have worked towards the opportunity to play in the NBA," said Martin, who peppered his announcement with images of the Philippine flag and included the hashtag "Pamilya" in his post.

"I have now decided to take another step into making my dream a reality," he said. "I will forever cherish the time I spent at ASU; Arizona will always be a home to me."

Martin, whose mother Mary Ann Macaspac is Filipina, was included in the "23 for 23" pool of players by then-Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes, and was considered for the national team in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

He was named to the Pac-12 Second Team in 2019, and was the Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman.

If he is drafted, he will be the second Filipino-American guard in the NBA after Utah's Jordan Clarkson
