Gilas to play as guest team in PBA

THE Gilas Pilipinas will play as a guest team in the coming 46th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) season starting April 9.

In last Monday’s PBA Board of Governors meeting, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said the Gilas men’s team is also eligible to win a championship.

Marcial cited a similar case in the past when the Northern Consolidated Cement-backed national team ruled the 1985 PBA Reinforced Conference.

Handled by coach Ron Jacobs, NCC was led by Chip Engelland, Jeff Moore, Hector Calma, Yves Dignadice and Peter Aguilar.

Marcial, however, said collegiate players who will be tapped to play for the national team will have to secure special guest licenses from the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) before being allowed to play.

The PBA board also agreed that the PBA Draft for Gilas players on March 14 will only be good for three to five picks.

As a result, only Terrafirma, NorthPort, and Blackwater Bossing would be allowed to make the first three picks of the draft.

Reports, however, said NLEX would take the place of Blackwater as part of the blockbuster JP Erram trade to Talk N Text.

Sa ngayon kung ano order sa regular round ganoon din sa special draft,” related Marcial.

The latest development would also make the coming Gilas special draft similar to the last one held in 2019, when Isaac Go, and brothers Matt and Mike Nieto were taken by SBP.
