Grace, St. Stephen in big wins

GRACE Christian College  subdued St. Peter Apostle School, 77-69, and  St. Stephen outplayed Philippine  Cultural College,  98-77, to boost  their chances in the Tanduay Athletics-Metro Manila Tiong Lian  (MMTL) Alumni 40 years old and above  basketball championship at the  Tanduay gym in Manila.

Dexter Quan played another solid game with team-high  22 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals, while  Francis Sy added 14 points and nine rebounds to power Grace Christian to its third win against only one loss in this  tough, nine-team tournament sponsored by Tanduay Athletics.

Quan scored five in Grace Christian’s game-changing  9-0 run that turned a  three-point deficit (56-59) into a six-point lead (65-59) with  still 3:56 left in the game.

Two more free throws by Quan  made it 75-67 for Grace Christian  with less than a minute left.

Tracy Jasper Ng carried the fight for St. Peter with 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

Alexander Dee added 12 points and11 rebounds and Julian Dychauco contributed 11 points and five rebounds for St. Peter, which fell to 1-5 overall.

St. Stephen relied on Franklin  Lee,  Joey Chua and Patterson Ngo to roll back PCC and clinch its third win in five matches

Lee led the way with 26 points, including five triples,  and six rebounds; Chua had 16 points  and Ngo had 13 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Arthur Go had a triple double of 23 points and 15 rebounds,  while Richard Rondael added 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds for PCC.

Sandy Tan and Alexander Austria contributed 11 points apiece.

The  tournament resumes today (Jan.14) with an explosive doubleheader pitting   Xavier ( 3-2)  against  St. Jude (1-3) at  8 p.m. and  Chiang  Kai Shek (4-0) against Grace Christian   (3-1)  at  9:30 p.m. 

The tournament is organized by  MMTL president Christian Tan with Johnny Tam as operations head and  Horacio Lim and Roger Sia as commissioners.
