Jubilee, St. Stephen advance

THE semifinals of the Tanduay Athletics-Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) alumni 40 years old and above  tournament will pit top seed Chiang Kai Shek College against  No. 4  Jubilee Christian Academy and No. 2 Xavier School against No. 3 St. Stephen 's High School.

This was finalized  as Jubillee Christian edged Grace Christian College, 57-56, and St. Stephen routed Uno High School, 65-36, in a pair of knockout matches at the CKSC gym in Manila.

Jeffrey  Goh delivered the game-winner when he hit a short jumper with one second left as Jubilee escaped with a heart-stopping win over Grace Christian.

Goh’s heroics came after Dexter  Quan completed a steal with 15 seconds left  and   Richmond Lee hit a layup to put Grace Christian ahead for the last  time at 56-55 with only seven seconds left.

Lester Henrison  Ong topscored with 19 points, including five triples,  for Jubilee, which earned a crack at CKSC in the  crossover semis.

Goh added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds and Ramon Lianko had 11 points and five boards.

Tiu had team-high six assists,  including one  to Goh that helped seal the win for Jubilee.

Quan was the top man for Grace  Christian with 17 points and 15 rebounds while playing the  most minutes in the game.

Quan,  however,  failed to get enough support with Lee and Francis Walden Sy contributing eight points apiece.

St. Stephen caught Uno in its worst shape and came away with a decisive victory in a low-scoring battle to set up a semifinal duel against Xavier.

Alain Andres finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Patterson Ngo added 10 points and 11 boards for St. Stephen,  which outscored Uno, 37-11, in the middle qiarters to win pulling away.

Kenneth Tung led Uno with seven points,  followed by McRobert Dytiandu with six points and 11 rebounds and Rembrandt Ngo with six markers.

So lopsided was the match that St. Stephen made 27 of 60 shots for 45 percent compared to only 16-of-74 by Uno.

St. Stephen also had more rebounds than Uno (58-42) and  more assists (20-8).

The MMTLBA  is headed by Christian Tan. 

Operations head is Johnny Tam, while commissooners are Horacio Lim and Roger Sia.
