KaTropa slip past B-Pier

TALK ‘N Text pulled off a 103-100 win over a NorthPort team that surprisingly played tough on both ends in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The KaTropa were pushed to the limit as their defense proved not enough and had to lean on Troy Rosario for the big plays to subdue the Batang Pier in a battle of defense.

Kevin Ferrer had just given NorthPort its last of the lead at 100-98 with a triple in the last 1:06 left, when Rosario took matters into his hands by making a hurried triple in the ensuing play.

He made it in the right corner to put TNT on top for good, 101-100, sending NorthPort to sue for time to design a game-tying play.

The Batang Pier were unfortunate as they failed to translate in their disorganized play, paving the way for Rosario’s two freethrows off Robert Bolick’s last foul to seal the win for TNT.

TNT has now clinched its fifth straight win while sending NorthPort reeling to its fourth loss.

Earlier, the Batang Pier had difficulty carrying out their offense in the first quarter in the face of the KaTropa’s sustained defensive, with Mychal Ammons becoming the most affected after he was limited to just two points, six rebounds and one assist inside 18-minute stint of the entire first half.

The Batang Pier nevertheless managed to make a good run late in the opening quarter when they uncorked a brief run capped by Kevin Ferrer’s triple to trim TNT’s lead to just 24-18 at the end of the first 12 minutes of action.

Roger Pogoy started the second period with a booming triple, Don Trollano made a three-point play and a putback, before Pogoy canned in two more freethrows as TNT stretched its lead to 34-23.

The Batang Pier countered with an 8-0 roll built around Russell Escoto’s three-point play, Robert Bolick’s two freethrows and Paolo Taha’s triple to move within 34-31, before TNT retaliated with its own run ignited by Ryan Reyes’ triple for a 46-38 lead at the turn.
