UAAP CHAMPION Ateneo and NCAA titlist San Beda will clash in a best-of-three series for a spot in the PCCL National Collegiate Championship on Jan. 21 at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The winner of the showdown between the two collegiate heavyweights will face University of the Visayas of Cebu in a knockout clash for the PCCL crown slated in February.
The Green Lancers won the Philippine Regional Championship at the expense of Naga College Foundation in their own best-of-three series, 2-0 sweep.
UV advanced to the National Collegiate Championship finals for the first time since 2007.
The Green Lancers nipped the Tigers, 76-72, before completing the sweep with an 89-72 rout.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman (PSC) William “Butch” Ramirez lauded the partnership of PSC and PCCL in promoting the National Collegiate Championship as “a program recognizing excellence of student-athletes in basketball.”
The partnership, Ramirez added, will strengthen the stature of the NCC as the unified program in search for the “one national collegiate champion” in basketball.
As tangible symbol for recognition and reward, the PSC will award the prestigious President's Cup to the National Champion. Scholarship grants and other sports equipment will also be awarded to the top teams in the competition.
Chairman Rey Gamboa appreciated the recognition extended by the PSC leadership as the PCCL continues to pursue promoting school-based basketball programs and encourage league competitions.
He noted that the PCCL has been involved in the nationwide multi-level competition in search of the national champion for the past 15 years.
More than 30 mother leagues conduct annual tournaments and the top teams advance to the regional level competitions to earn a place in the championship.
