Poligrates drops 67 as MP advances

CEBUANO guard Eloy Poligrates set a new PBA D-League record of 67 points as Marinerong Pilipino overpowered iWalk, 138-100, to clinch a twice-to beat incentive in the Foundation Cup quarterfinals yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Hoping to gain a second chance to strut his wares in the pros, Poligrates put up a dazzling performance, drilling in 11-of-25 shooting from beyond the arc and shot 28-of-45 from the field overall to help the Skippers remain unbeaten in five Group A games.

“Nagwo-work hard lang ako. Double effort lang talaga ako. Gusto kong maglaro sa PBA ulit eh,” said the Camotes Island, Cebu native.

Poligrates easily surpassed the old scoring mark of 58 points set by AMA Online University’s James Martinez on Aug. 2, 2016.

Marinerong Pilipino coach Yong Garcia took the opportunity for Poligrates to make D-League history.

“Nakita namin yung score ni Poligrates na kayang abutan so binigyan namin siya ng chance habulin yung record ni Martinez. Sobrang ganda ng inilaro ni Poligrates,” said Garcia.

Poligrates’ show overshadowed BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare’s wire-to-wire 112-100 over McDavid-La Salle Araneta that secured them a secure a playoff berth.

The Saints’ 1-2 punch shone once more, as Joshua Fontanilla had 24 points, six assists and three steals while Irvin Palencia added 14 points.

Solidifying its hold of the Group B lead with a 4-0 record, BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare is now setting its sights for the twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.

Continuing their dominant show, coach Steve Tiu wanted his Saints to be consistent in their game as they prepare for the tougher battles ahead.              (Theodore P. Jurado)
