Scorpions getting hotter

SENEGAL’S Maodo Diouf sets a new PBA D-League record with 30 rebounds as he led Centro Escolar University led to a 71-65 win over City of Valencia Bukidnon-San Sebastian  yesterday at the Paco Arena.

The victory put the Scorpions on top of the Foundation Group standings with a 4-0 card.

Diouf erased the old mark of 29 boards set by AMA Online Education’s Jay-R Taganas in 2015. The CEU slotman also finished with a game-high 21 points and four blocks.

“He was controlling the boards,” said Scorpions coach Derrick Pumaren on Diouf.

Later, Soulemane Chabi Yo dropped 32 points and grabbed 25 rebounds as Aspirants’ Cup-leading University of Santo Tomas extended its perfect run to four games with a 94-82 conquest of Go for Gold.

CEU squandered its strong 19-5 start as the Golden Harvest ran back and led by nine in the second frame, but the Scoprions restored order in the final canto by building a 69-59 lead with 4:20 remaining.

City of Valencia Bukidnon, however, refused to throw in the towel, as Kenneth Villapando’s three-point play conversion inched his side to within five with 2:41 left in the game.

Allyn Bulanadi tried to trim down the deficit, but the Golden Harvest sniper muffed both of his shots as Diouf was there to secure the rebounds, which not only sealed the deal but the new league record as well.

“Valencia, in their first three games, really started well so for today we wanted to start strong which we did,” said Pumaren. “But I’m not happy with our turnovers because they came back.”

CEU turned the ball over 20 times which led to 19 points for the opposition.

Jan Formento produced 16 points, Christian Uri added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Keanu Caballero made 10 markers, six assists and five boards for the Scoprions.

Bulanadi had 16 points but shot 6-of-22 from the field for the Golden Harvest, who fell to 3-1 in second place in their group. Alvin Capobres contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds while JM Calma added 10.      The scores:
