Scorpions keep card clean

CENTRO Escolar University extended its perfect run to six games, while Cignal-Ateneo posted the second largest winning margin in PBA D-League history yesterday at the JCSGO Gym.

The Scorpions exploded for 35 points in the fourth quarter in a 93-76 romp of Marinerong Pilipino, while the Blue Eagles tore McDavid to shreds, 106-31, to move closer to clinching a playoff berth.

Malick Diouf scored 10 of his 22 points in the payoff period as CEU pulled away from a slim 58-57 advantage at the end of the third period to solidify its hold on top of the Foundation Group standings.

Cignal-Ateneo, which nearly matched Tanduay’s record 76-point shellacking of Zark’s Burgers in July 11, 2017, firmed up its grip of the Aspirants’ Group lead with a 6-1 slate.

The 31 points that McDavid scored was an all-time low.

With the Scorpions still the only undefeated team in the tournament, CEU coach Derrick Pumaren knows that his troops are trained their eyes on them.

“I told the boys noong the break that we got four games left and it’s gonna be tougher. It’s gonna be harder sa mga darating na mga games namin. We have to be ready for every situation,” said Pumaren.

Keanu Caballero was solid in orchestrating the plays for the Scorpions and finished with 17 points, six assists, three boards and two steals, while Pierce Chan (15), Judel Fuentes and John Lisbo (11) also scored in twin digits.

The Scorpions held the Skippers to 19 points in the final 10 minutes of play.

“We played defense that is carrying us (in the tournament) and I think that’s why we won the ballgame,” said Pumaren.
