Skippers, Engineers flog D-L rivals

MARINERONG Pilipino topped Asia’s Lashes Tomas Morato, 73-51, to formalize its entry to the next round of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Energetic guard Eloy Poligrates sustained his solid play for the Skippers with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists while unheralded Jayboy Solis was the other player in double-digits with 11 points.

Earlier, Technological Institute of the Philippines locked up a top two spot in Group B with a 105-95 win over lowly Alberei.
After Marinerong Pilipino secured a fourth straight win in Group A and, more importantly, a playoff berth, Marinerong Pilipino coach Yong Garcia is hoping his team will go much deeper in the playoffs.

Senegalese big man Papa Ndiaye, who missed the previous game due to a hamstring injury, had a smashing return with 37 points, 18 rebounds and four assists to lead the Engineers in clinching the twice-to-beat advantage heading into the quarterfinals.

Despite finishing the eliminations with a 5-1 record, TIP coach Potit de Vera was not satisfied with the way his troops played.

“I’m not happy with today’s ballgame,” said De Vera.  ”I don’t want to go to the playoffs with the thinking that the players are good enough.”

The Kings were able to cut down the Engineers’ 92-74 fourth quarter lead to six before falling short in their last-gasp uprising.

A Ximone Sandagon’s putback dunk and a Ndiaye’s lay-up in the final 37 seconds preserved TIP’s win.

“We always have to go all out and I just want to keep on doing that,” said De Vera.

Bryan Santos chipped in 28 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals while Sandagon added 12 points and four boards for the Engineers.

James Martinez had 13 points for the Soldiers, who fell to an even 2-2 slate.

Jonathan Parreño and Joemari Lacastesantos each scored 20 points for Alberei, which stumbled to its fourth successive defeat.
