Stags seek key win, pray for a Cards’ loss

October 14, 2019

SAN SEBASTIAN hopes that everything will be favorable on its side in the race for the remaining semifinals berth today in the

NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Stags gun for their 10th win against also-ran Arellano University at 2 p.m.

But a victory will not guarantee a semis berth for San Sebastian, as a Mapua win over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta at 12 noon will keep the chase for the No. 4 slot hanging in the balance.

With a 9-7 card, the Stags are ahead by a full game over the fifth-running Cardinals (8-8).

College of Saint Benilde, running sixth with a 7-9 slate, plays Jose Rizal University in the last game of another tripleheader at 4 p.m.

The Blazers actually have a slim chance of making it to the semifinals via the backdoor.  But St. Benilde will be eliminated if San Sebastian prevails in the second match.

The Stags hope to get the job done in the final week of the long double-round eliminations.

San Sebastian could have completed the Final Four cast last week, but dropped a 73-90 decision to Mapua last Thursday.

With a new lease on life, the Cardinals will go all out this week by sweeping their last two games to force a playoff for the No. 4 slot - or clinching the last semis berth if the Stags drop their remaining matches.
