Tams upend Maroons in OT

October 06, 2019

WENDEL Comboy hit a key jumper in the final 18.3 seconds as Far Eastern University slipped past University of the Philippines in overtime, 82-79, and opened its second round campaign on a bright note last night in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Fighting Maroons, sent the game in overtime by rallying from 16 points down in regulation, tried to force another extension but Javi Gomez de Liaño bungled a potential game-tying triple in the dwindling seconds.

“It was a hard fought win for us,” said coach Olsen Racela after the Tamaraws clinched their second straight win. “We have to focus what’s in front of us which is UP.

That’s what we did. We played possession by possession.”

Earlier, Justine Baltazar had an impressive 25-point, 25-rebound performance as La Salle joined FEU and UP in third place at 4-4 with an 85-61 rout of National University.

Comboy could have sealed the deal for the Tamaraws in the final 24.7 seconds in regulation but his three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

The Maroons unleashed a 16-0 run capped by Javi Gomez de Liaño lay-up off a steal to tie the game at 69-69 all.
Ken Tuffin led FEU with 18 points and five rebounds, LJ Gonzales had 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists while Pat Tchuente also produced a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

UP lost in the first of coach Bo Perasol’s three-game suspension, but not without giving the Tamaraws a fight.

Kobe Paras, who missed UP’s first round meeting against the Tamaraws due to injury, had 22 points and nine rebounds while reigning MVP Bright Akhuetie added 14 points, 11 boards and two blocks for the Maroons.
