University of Santo Tomas, St. Clare get job done in PBA D-League

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas dropped 19  triples in a workmanlike 112-98 dismantling of Cignal-Ateneo to gain the solo lead in the Aspirants Group of the PBA D-League yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Shooting well from beyond the arc that frustrated the Blue Eagles, the Growling Tigers easily overturned a 15-point first half deficit and went on to take the 14-point win against the reigning UAAP kings.

“Ang mindset namin dito sa game namin, ma-gauge kung nasaan na kami,” said UST coach Aldin Ayo. “(Ateneo) is the best collegiate team dito sa atin, so gusto lang namin na masukat lang ang kaya namin. Good thing naman  nakalaro ng maayos ang mga bata.”

Earlier, St. Clare-Virtual Reality scored an 82-77 win over Che'Lu Bar and Grill to remain unbeaten in  the  Aspirants'  Group, while Go for Gold-CSB  scores its first win at the expense of FamilyMart-Enderun, 78-69.

Cashing in on the absence of Ivorian center Ange Kouame, Tigers big man Soulemane Chabi Yo came through with 20 points, nine rebounds and two assists.

Mark Nonoy led UST with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists, Rhenz Abando shot 6-of-9 from downtown to finish with 21, while Renzo Subido added 15 points built on five treys, to go with four assists.

The Eagles dropped at 2-1.

Gian Mamuyac topscored for Cignal with 18 points while Thirdy Ravena  had 10 points and five boards in his PBA D-League debut.

Junjie Hallare led the Saints with 19 points, 12 coming in the second half, to go with six steals and five rebounds, while Irven Palencia chipped in 13 points.
