Uno overcomes St. Jude, Tan’s triple double

UNO High School overcame a huge performnce  by Bong Tan to edge St. Jude College,  71-70, for its fourth  win in five matches in the Tanduay Athletics-Metro Manila Tiong Lian (MMTL) Alumni 40 years old and above  basketball championship at the Tanduay gym last Dec. 13.

John  Erwin Cheng scored seven of his  15 points in the fourth quarter,  and Cassie Tan added 11 points and seven rebounds for Uno, which blew an early 14-point lead and needed a strong finish to hold off St. Jude.

Cheng opened the fourth quarter with a long triple to make it 53-54 and added a short jumper three minutes later  to give Uno a 57-56 lead which it never relinquished.

Uno’s win spoiled Bong Tan's rare triple-double of 18 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in nearly 33 minutes and Louie Kaw's 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting.

St. Jude had a chance to steal the win when Bong Tan nailed a triple to make it 70-71 with still 36 seconds left and forced Uno to commit a 24-second violation.

But Jerson Santiago missed a potential game-winning trey with five seconds remaining.

In the only other game, St. Stephen outsteadied St. Peter, 89-85, to even its record to 2-2.

Franklin Lee scattered 22 points with four triples,  Vincent Ng added 17 points and 11 rebounds and  Patterson Ngo had 17 points to lead St. Stephen to victory.

Kerby Chua topscored for St. Peter with 28 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the three-point area.

Tracy Jasper Ng added 14 points and nine rebounds and John Palao had 13 points and five assists for St. Peter.

MMTL president Christian Tan said the tournament takes a two-week break in  observance of the Christmas season.

Games  will resume  on Jan. 7, 2019.

Assisting Tan are Johny Tan as  operations head  and  Horacio Lim as commissioner.
