Yeng Guiao has stepped down as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas, a day after he and the team returned from a horrible campaign in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.
In a letter, Guiao said he took full responsibility for what happened to Gilas Pilipinas and was FROM PAGE 16
grateful to have been given a chance to coach the team in the first place.
"I am stepping down, as of today, as the head coach of the Gilas men’s basketball team, in order to give the SBP a free hand in building and developing a program towards achieving our objective of competing with the best of the best," Guiao said.
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve our country through the sport we love most."
In a forgettable stint in the biggest basketball showpiece in the world, the Filipinos finished without a win to show in five games and eventually finished dead-last in a field of 32 nations.
Gilas lost to Italy and Serbia by the proverbial mile, dropped an overtime thriller to Angola, but was beaten black and blue by Tunisia and Iran in the classification round.
