THREE more major boxing events, including the 20th Gabriel "Flash" Elorde Memorial Awards and Banquet of Champions, were postponed due to growing concern over the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

An annual undertaking by the Elorde family,  the Flash Elorde Awards and Banquet of Champions was originally scheduled on March 25 at the Okada Manila Hotel in Parañaque City.

No new date was announced, although the Elorde family said it could eitger be on the last week of April or first week of May

Now on its 20th year,  the event organized by Johnny Elorde Management International in cooperation with the Elorde Sports Center and Southpaw Bar and Grill  pays tribute to the outstanding boxers who excelled in the previous year.

It will also  be held yo commemorate the late Elorde's 85th birthday.

This year, world champions Jerwin Ancajas, John Riel Casimero and Pedro Taduran were supposed to receive the "Boxer of the Year" citation, the highest award in professional boxing in the Philippines.

The three -- International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Ancajas, World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Casimero and IBF minimumweight titleholder Taduran --  came through with remarkable performances in 2019.

Also postponed were the Philippine flyweight boxing championship of Elorde International Promotions of Bebot Elorde on March 21 (rescheduled on April 18); and the Marty Elorde Boxing Promotions on March 28 (rescheduled on April 25).

Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham " Baham" Mitra welcomed the postponement of the three boxing promotions to help fight the spread of the deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

"It is only proper that we postpone these boxing events to help the government contain the spread of this pandemic," said Mitra in a statement.
