THE plan to create the Philippine Boxing and Combat Sports Commission (PBCSC) can wait.
Or better still, the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) should be further strengthened to enable it to perform its mandate to regulate professional sports even better.
This was the stressed by GAB Commissioner Mario Masanguid during his appearance in the 18th “Usapang Sports on Air” by the Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) via Zoom yesterday.
Masanguid said he fully agree with the vision of Sen. Manny Pacquiao to look after the welfare of professional boxers, but the creation of the PBCSC is not only untimely but unncessary.
“GAB, under Chairman Baham Mitra, is doing very well. Even President Duterte is supporting the program of GAB. Nakita ni Presidente na maganda ang ginagawa namin sa GAB kaya all-out ang support nya,” said Masanguid during the weekly public service program sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and Games and Amusements Board (GAB).
Masanguid also questioned the timing of the plan to establish the PBCSC as a separate body from the GAB.
“We fully support the initiatives of Sen.Pacquiao to advance the interest of Filipino boxers and other combat sports athletes. But creating a new government agency or office now may not be a good move since we are facing pandemic and government resources are better directed to help solve these problems,” explained Masanguid.
“Ang dami-dami nating problemang dapat harapin ngayon. May pandemic, may bagyo. Bakit dyan tayo mag-focus ngayon sa PBCSC. Hindi naman muna kailangan iyan, lalo na halos walong buwan na yun pandemic,” added Masanguid, the long-time barangay leader who helped launch the Mayor Duterte for President Movement in Davao City in 2014.
Masanguid also suggested the P150-million budget being proposed for PBCSC could be used wisely.
“Ang daming naghihirap ngayon, ang daming umiiyak dahil walang makain. Ibigay na lang natin sa tao yun pera,” explained Masanguid.
“Matagal na ang GAB, bago pa kami ilagay ni Presidente dyan. Si Chairman Mitra at ibang mga kasama ko, nakikita ko masipag naman lahat. Kung may mga magandang suhestiyon sa ikabubuti ng boxing at iba pang professional sports, pag-usapan natin at pagtulungan natin.”
