PCAP teams to test mettle

THE 24 member-teams of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) get the chance to gauge their strength with pre-season games on Saturday, Jan 9.

A total of 12 matches pitting the Northern and Southern Division teams will be played in the pre-season competition held exactly a week before the formal opening on Jan. 16.

Game time is 7 p.m.

PCAP founding president- commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria said the 24 teams divided into the North and South Divisions were randomly paired for the event aimed at giving the teams the much-needed exposure before the competition proper.

The pre-season matchups:

1. Cagayan vs. Zamboanga

2. Manila vs. Iloilo

3. Antipolo vs. Toledo

4. Pasig vs. Cebu

5. Rizal vs. Cordova

6. Olongapo vs. Surigao

7. Laguna vs. Iriga

8. Caloocan vs. Camarines

9. Cavite vs. Mindoro

10. Quezon City vs. Negros

11. San Juan vs. Lapu-Lapu

12. Isabela vs. Palawan

Each team will field a total of seven players, with two titled players, one female, one senior and three homegrown players.

They will play one blitz ( 3+2) and one rapid (15 miniutes play to finish).

The formal opening of the PCAP First Conference is scheduled on Jan. 16.

The competition will serve as the inaugural tournament of PCAP, the first and only professional chess league in Southeast Asia.

Among the notable players who are expected to see action are GMs Eugene Torre (Rizal), Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Iloilo), Julio Sadorra (Manila), Mark Paragua (Camarines), John Paul Gomez and Rogelio Barcenilla, Jr., (Cabuyao), Darwin Laylo and Roland Salvador (Pasig) and Oliver Barbosa (San Juan).

The competition is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra.
