(Filoil Flying V Centre) 2 p.m. – AU vs EAC (Men)
4 p.m. – MU vs LPU (Men)
LYCEUM of the Philippines University today seeks the first twice-to-beat slot in the Final Four when it plays also-ran Mapua in a game the Pirates can win twice on a weekday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Determined to end the elimination round campaign strong after a failed attempt for a sweep bid, the Pirates are tipped to prevail in the 4 p.m. match with the Cardinals.
With College of Saint Benilde’s stunning 67-69 loss to Emilio Aguinaldo College Friday, LPU together with defending champion San Beda have clinched the first two semifinal berths.
The Pirates are currently locked in a tight battle with the Red Lions for the top ranking after the double-round elims. Both teams are tied for the league’s best record at 13-1 and are three games ahead of third-running Letran (10-4).
LPU mightily rebounded from its shock 81-83 loss to University of Perpetual Help System Dalta with an emphatic 113-79 victory over Arellano University last Thursday.
Like the Chiefs, the Cardinals are already out of Final Four contention, and the Pirates simply need to play aggressive right from the get-go and avoid sense of complacency.
“The goal remains the same, which is to win the championship. But we know it will take a step-by-step approach for us starting with this (Mapua) game,” said LPU coach Topex Robinson.
The Pirates have four more games left.
Making its second consecutive Final Four appearance, LPU will try to pile up as many wins as it can before it cross paths with San Beda in a potential Finals preview on Oct. 18.
Arellano and Emilio Aguinaldo College clash in the curtain raiser at 2 p.m.
The 3-11 Generals hope to carry the momentum of last Friday’s upset of the Blazers as they try to close out another forgettable season on a positive note.
