CHESS and volleyball, two sports closest to the Filipinos’ heart, will be the main dish in the third edition of the “Usapang Sports” presented by the Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) this Thursday at the National Press Club in Intramuros.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Asia’s first GM Eugene and GM Jayson Gonzales have been invited to talk about the coming 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships (2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup) scheduled Dec. 9-19 at the Tiara Hotel in Makati.
The tournament, which will be participated in by top players from 16 countries, serves as qualifying event for the World Chess Cup 2019 in Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia.
Top Filipino players seeing action are GMs John Paul Gomez, Darwin Laylo and Joey Antonio, IMs Jan Emmanuel Garcia, Haridas Pascua, Marvin Miciano, Paolo Bersamina and recently-crowned ASEAN seniors champion Chito Garma in the men’s division and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna in the women’s side.
Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) president Edgardo “Boy” Cantada will talk about the issues affecting volleyball, including the existing membership of the PVF to the world's governing body in the sport, FIVB, and recent World Congress.
Cantada will also discuss the coming Tanduay Athletics 18-under volleyball championships and the PVF's grassroot development program around the country that continue to benefit public high schools.
