Women sports leaders at TOPS

THREE more outstanding women in sports will take centerstage as the Tabloids Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) continues its “Women’s Month” celebrations in this Thursday’s “Usapang Sports on Air” via Zoom.

Philippine Olympians Association president Akiko Thomson-Guevara, taekwondo champion-coach Janice Lagman-Lizardo and duathlon star Pawie Fornea will share inspiring stories of success of women in sports during the 10 a.m. public service program sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission ( PSC), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

Thomson-Guevara is one of the country’s most successful swimmers. The 46-year-old Filipino champion represented the country in the Olympics thrice in 1988 Seoul, 19992 Barcelona.and 1996 Atlanta and won a record eight gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games from 1987 to 1993.

Thomson-Guevara, who succeeded Art Macapagal, will also give an update on the activities of POA as its way of giving back to under-privileged young athletes athletes and disadvantaged children.

Lagman-Lizardo will share her experiences as a taekwondo-champion and coach of the University of the Philippines, and as a wife of well-known taekwondo star Japoy Lizardo.

Fornea, a bronze medalist in duathlon in the recent SEA Games in Manila, will discuss her experiences during the pandemic as well as plans in the sport this year.

TOPS president Ed Andaya of People’s Tonight is inviting all officers and members, and friends in the sports community, to join the weekly sports forum also shown live on Facebook and YouTube.

This is the 11th session for the year of TOPS, which is composed of editors, columnists, reporters and photographers of the country’s leading national tabloids and blogger-friends from different social media groups.

Last March 4, TOPS opened women’s month celebrations by guesting the Negrense Abanse duo of Alexa Polidario and Erjane Magdato, who ruled the Gatorade-PSL Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup in Subic.

And last March 11, PSC Commissioner Celia Kiram, Philippine Sports Hall of Fame awardee Elma Muros-Posadas and mixed martial arts superstar Lara Pearl Alvarez of Team Lakay attended the session.

Veteran sportscaster Ernest Leo Hernandez is the moderator.
