DEFENDING three-time champion Arellano University and College of Saint Benilde shoot for second straight wins as they play debuting foes today in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Chiefs take on Emilio Aguinaldo College at 12 noon while the Lady Blazers go up against Mapua at 2 p.m.

With the compressed start due the late start of the volleyball season, Arellano coach Obet Javier wanted his troops to be in tip-top shape.

“Hindi ka puwedeng mag-relax. Lalong lalo na hindi ka dapat magkamali,” said Javier.

For graduating open hitter Regine Arocha, the Lady Chiefs need to elevate their game if the Legarda-based spikers want to remain in the throne.

“Lahat may skills. Lahat kayang lumaban,” said Arocha, a two-time Finals MVP.

Arellano opened its campaign with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University last Friday.

Although their off-season performances were not impressive, Javier believes that the Lady Chiefs are still capable of extending their reign.

“Nakita ko yung kapasidad ng mga bagong player at nakita ko yung mga kakulangan nila,” noted Javier.

St. Benilde, which made a lot of waves in the off-season leagues, made an early statement with a 25-17, 14-25, 25-17, 25-20 conquest of University of Perpetual Help Systen Dalta also last Friday.

Definitely, the Lady Blazers are looking good with a mix of veteran and rookie players that can compete for the championship.

The Lady Generals and the Lady Cardinals, who were 0-9 and 1-8 last season, respectively, are aiming for a better effort this year.
