ARELLANO University, fresh off a week-long break, stakes its unbeaten record against Jose Rizal University today in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Coach Obet Javier knows that the four-peat seeking Lady Chiefs cannot lower their guard in the 12 noon duel with the Lady Bombers.
“Tamang practice ang kailangan talaga. Isang pagkakamali lang, puwede kang malagay sa alanganin,” said Javier, whose team is currently tied with idle San Beda at 2-0.
League-leading College of Saint Benilde and winless Emilio Aguinaldo College collide at 2 p.m. to cap another women’s doubleheader.
Holding a perfect 3-0 card, the Lady Blazers are tipped to prevail over the 0-2 Lady Generals, who are hoping to avoid falling a three-way tie at the bottom. Lyceum of the Philippines University and San Sebastian have worse records than EAC at 0-3.
JRU, eyeing a return Final Four trip this season, split its two five-setter matches. The Lady Bombers opened their campaign with a 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8 win over the Lady Stags before dropping a 17-25, 25-22, 27-25, 14-25, 6-15 decision from the hands of the Lady Red Spikers.
Arellano has high respect on JRU.
Aside from their ace spiker Dolly Verzosa, the Lady Bombers had two good middle blockers in Riza Rose and Sidney Niegos.
“Kung maganda ang blocking ng JRU, kailamgan may pang-counter kami doon. Magpo-focus kami doon,” said Javier.
Regine Arocha has been leading the scoring in the first two matches, but the graduating Lady Chiefs open spiker hopes to get ample support to somehow lessen her burden in carrying the team.
