Lady Stags seek share of 2nd place

January 02, 2019

SAN Sebastian seeks a piece of second place as it tangles with Jose Rizal University at the resumption of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament today at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Gunning for third straight victory, the Lady Stags are expected to face a tough battle in the 12 noon duel, as the Lady Bombers eye to stay within the top four range.

Presently tied with idle College of Saint Benilde at 4-1, San Sebastian hopes to join San Beda (5-1) at No. 2 that will not only boost its Final Four bid but also a possible shot at the twice-to-beat incentive.

Defending two-time champion Arellano University is the remaining undefeated team with a 6-0 record.

Sporting an even 3-3 card, JRU is one-and-half games out of the No. 4 spot and a defeat will put the Mandaluyong-based spikers’ bid for a second straight semifinal appearance in peril.

Winless teams Mapua and Emilio Aguinaldo College try to open the new year by getting that elusive first win in the other match at 2 p.m.

Before the Christmas break, the Lady Stags carved out a 25-19, 25-20, 26-24 victory over the Lady Generals, with Joyce Sta. Rita and Nikka Dalisay combining for 21 points.

San Sebastian, the league’s most successful women’s volleyball program, hopes to return to the Final Four after missing the bus last year.

After a tough five-set defeat to the Lady Red Spikers, the Lady Bombers need a confidence-boosting win to end 2018 on a high note.

Behind Dolly Verzosa and Karen Montojo, JRU swept EAC, 25-21, 25-8, 25-20, last Dec. 18 to move up in sixth place.
