Long lull in NCAA ‘wars’

February 20, 2020

THE NCAA will most likely resume its women’s volleyball tournament as well as its remaining second semester events on March 16.

After a meeting Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA Management Committee proposed to its Policy Board the resumption of events for volleyball, football, lawn tennis, soft tennis and girls volleyball which was postponed due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

“This is subject to the approval of our Policy Board. Our recommendation is to resume on March 16,” said NCAA Management Committee chairman Peter Cayco of host Arellano University.

“Part of our decision is we shall be consulting CHED, DepEd, DOH and together with our school physicians whether it’s safe to push through with our schedules and they’re ok with it,” he added.

College of Saint Benilde was leading the women’s volleyball standings with a perfect 7-0 card when play halted a week ago.  The Lady Blazers are two wins away from clinching an outright Finals berth.

Aside from St. Benilde, Arellano, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta and San Beda are already in the next round, with the Final Four or step-ladder format still has to be settled.

Cayco announced that the athletics competitions will now be held on March 16-21, while the kiddies basketball 15-under tournament will be played on April 25.

Beach volleyball, which will make its return to Subic, is scheduled on April 29.

The cheerleading competition is set on March 30 but without the awarding of the overall championship, with several events still to held or finished.

The opening of Season 96, with Letran as host, will now open in August instead of July.
