Rondina ready for UST’s Final 4 battle

CHEERED with ‘M-V-P chants’ when University of Santo Tomas defeated Far Eastern University in straight sets last week, Sisi Rondina has shown her resolve to help the Tigresses in their bid to reclaim lost glory in the UAAP volleyball wars.

She would not even think any personal achievement even as UST is making a return stint to the Final Four.

What she is focusing is helping the Tigresses in their Final Four campaign.

“Ito lang masasabi ko, sa opinyon ko, ibibilin ko sa mga bata na dapat kailangan pareho kami ng mindset. Sabi ko nga na nangangarap akong umabot sa championship, lagi kong ire-remind sa kanila yun,” said Rondina, who is on her final year with the Tigresses.

“Gagawin ko ang mga kailangang gawin para ipakita na gusto kong maglaro para sa UST, mag-payoff ang mga paghihirap namin and kailangan kong lagyan ng actions iyan. Yun lang ang gagawin ko,” she said. “Sa mga bata, ako na ang bahalang magsabi sa kanila na, ‘are you with me?’ Na kailangan sama-sama tayo, walang iwanan.”

Rondina has been producing MVP-like numbers all-season long, dominating the scoring department with 238 points on 210 spikes, 15 blocks and 13 service aces, highlighted by a 35-point outburst in a narrow five-set defeat to Ateneo last March 20.

The Compostela, Cebu native is also in the running for the two Best Outside Spiker awards at stake, being second behind her rookie teammate Eya Laure with 33.28 percent in spikes.

On defense, Rondina is among the league’s top 10 diggers with 4.10 average per set.

A four-time champion in beach volleyball for the Tigresses, Rondina is hoping to end her indoor stint as a winner.

“Sana mabigyan nila ako ng magandang exit,” said Rondina. “Ngayon, OK na ako eh. Sobrang overwhelmed na ako.”

After the nine-day Holy Week break, UST will return in action against dangerous National University on April 28, with the España-based squad seeking to stay within reach of defending champion La Salle in the race for the one of the two twice-to-beat Final Four incentives up for grabs.

It will be an uphill climb, but Rondina is willing to do her part as long as her teammates will do their share.

“Pero sinasabi ko naman sa kanila, walang imposible kung mangarap tayo ng todo-todo at trabahuin namin,” said Rondina.
