Stags, Blazers triumph

SAN Sebastian and  St.Benilde kept within reach of the league leaders after a quick work of separate foes in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Stags swept Letran, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, while the Lady Blazers posted a dominant 25-11, 25-20, 25-13 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College.

Raising their records at 3-1, San Sebastian and St. Benilde moved within a game of defending champion Arellano University and San Beda, both sporting perfect 4-0 slates.

The Lady Stags actually played catch up with the Lady Knights in the third set before Iris Oliveros closed out the 70-minute clash with a quick hit - her 10th point of the match - to complete the comeback from a 16-19 deficit.

New San Sebastian setter Alexis Sison tossed in 28 excellent sets that produced balanced offense, with Nikka Dalisay, Shane Requierme and Joyce Sta. Rita chipping in eight points apiece.

With its third straight defeat after a season-opening win, Letran fell in a tie with Lyceum of the Philippines in seventh place.

Katleen dela Cruz and Miracle Mae Mendoza shared the scoring mantle for the Lady Knights with eight points apiece while Chamberlaine Cunada had seven hits and nine digs.

The Lady Blazers had an easier time on the Lady Generals, needing only 58 minutes to extend their winning streak to three games.

Klarisa Abriam scored all of her 14 points from spikes while Rachel Austero chipped in nine kills for St. Benilde.
