UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University hurdled separate foes to move closer from clinching Final Four berths in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre yesterday.
Sisi Rondina took over late in the third set as the Tigresses put University of the Philippines on the brink of elimination with a 25-21, 25-12, 26-24 victory.
Heather Guino-o and Jerrili Malabanan combined for 21 kills as the Lady Tamaraws finally won a straight-set match this season, fashioning out a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 romp of already eliminated National University.
Improving their records at 8-4, not only UST and FEU enhanced their semifinals chances, but also gave them a twice-to-beat slot incentive, as the two traditional powerhouses now trail defending champion La Salle (8-3) by just half-a-game.
“On the right track pa rin kami. Sa amin, importante ang last two games namin. Yung mga ganoong bagay, hindi namin lalagpasan, kailangang i-grab ang opportunity na ito,” said coach Kungfu Reyes, who is seeking to steer the Tigresses to their second Final Four stint in three seasons.
The loss - the sixth in 12 matches - put the Lady Maroons on the ropes, as the Diliman-based squad needs to sweep their last two games to gain a playoff for the last semis slot.
