Tales of Heroism: Cebu’s brave heart shows how a hero is born

Heroes come in various forms and age, often lacking the classic cape. They can be found everywhere, even during stormy weather, reminding us that courage and kindness come in many shapes.

Fifteen-year-old Jayboy Magdadaro from Liloan, Cebu, proved that youth and limited resources cannot stop someone from making a difference.

When Typhoon Tino caused severe flooding in his community, Jayboy acted quickly. Equipped with only a small boat and a lifebuoy, he bravely ventured into the turbulent waters to rescue people who were trapped by the rising floodwaters.

At the end of the day, Jayboy had saved more than 50 people, including children, pregnant women, and elderly residents. From sunrise to sunset, he navigated dangerous waters, repeatedly ferrying stranded families to safety amid debris and strong currents. His deep empathy for those in need drove him to rescue as many lives as possible.

Jayboy comes from a modest family enrolled in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) — the government’s flagship anti-poverty initiative implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

He is a Grade 9 student and the remaining monitored child under 4Ps in his household, receiving an education grant based on his consistent school attendance.

Despite his family’s economic hardships, he never let poverty hinder his courage and compassion. Equipped with a lifebuoy from his grandfather and a small boat belonging to his uncle, he did everything possible to reach those in danger and save them.

Jayboy’s bravery quickly drew attention both online and within his community. In recognition of his heroic deeds, Mabolo Barangay Captain Atty. Daniel Francis Arguedo awarded Jayboy a full scholarship for any course of his choosing, along with a monthly allowance of Php 3,000 to support his studies.

On Thursday (November 13), Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, commended the young hero: “Jayboy exemplified the true meaning of heroism. His courage at such a young age is something we can all take pride in. I hope his story inspires every Filipino to support one another, regardless of the circumstances.”

Asst. Secretary Dumlao of the Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) marvelled at how inspiring Jayboy’s actions have been, particularly as a beneficiary of the DSWD’s 4Ps.

“As a 4Ps monitored child, it is truly admirable how Jayboy overcame his own challenges to help others. His kind, selfless, and brave act serves as an example of what our youth can achieve,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.

Jayboy’s tale of courage shows that age doesn’t define heroism. Often, it is young individuals with brave hearts who are ready to protect others, even in the midst of a storm. (KI)
