As we usher in January 2025, the Makakalikasan Nature Party Philippines reflects on the challenges and strides made toward implementing a circular economy and zero waste initiatives, both locally and globally. Despite some progress in solid waste management systems, the Philippines remains trapped in an unsustainable waste cycle. According to the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC), over 9.3 million tons of waste are generated yearly, with only 15% of this being recycled. The country’s recycling rate remains among the lowest in Southeast Asia, showing the urgent need for systemic changes.
Roy Jerusalem Cabonegro, President of the Makakalikasan Nature Party, states, “Circular economy is not just an aspiration but a necessity. As we look forward to 2025, we must confront the environmental costs of inefficient waste management. Zero waste and ecological economics should become the cornerstone of policy-making and industry standards.”
This year’s theme for the National Zero Waste Month, emphasizing the promotion of circular economic systems, could serve as a transformative moment for the Philippines. The Makakalikasan Alliance has declared January 2025 as Zero Waste and Ecological Economics Month, a period of action that underscores the party’s commitment to a greener, waste-free future. We are organizing several events to promote the transition to a circular economy and zero waste lifestyle.
The Green Normal Policy Forum on January 17 will discuss the zero waste economic system, emphasizing systemic integration of circular practices into our laws and industries. On January 22, the Orientation on Recycling Plant Business hosted by the Likas Kabuhayan Multi-Purpose Cooperative will introduce local businesses to recycling as a profitable and sustainable enterprise. Meanwhile, the Eco Action Leadership Camp for Makakalikasan Youth, scheduled for January 25-26 in San Juan, Batangas, will focus on biodiversity, habitat conservation, and ecological economics. Finally, the Zero Waste & Ecological Economics ACTION GROUP Online Event will take place on January 21, bringing together activists and policymakers to push for substantial reforms in waste management.
These events mark a pivotal opportunity for the Philippines to lead in the global push for circular economies. “Global movements are showing results, but at a snail’s pace. The Philippines must take bold steps now. We can’t wait for 2030 when the world may already be too late,” says Cabonegro. The time to act is now.
Let us unite for a cleaner, more sustainable future by embracing circular economies, reducing waste, and promoting the principles of ecological economics. Join us in making the Philippines a leader in zero waste solutions.
