Transformative Health Service Caravan Uplifts Lives at Iligan City Jail

Iligan City — On February 13, 2025, a wave of compassion and health consciousness swept through the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory (ICJMD) and the Iligan City Jail-Female Dormitory (ICJFD), thanks to a health service caravan organized by the Philippine Red Cross-Iligan City Chapter, with the invaluable support of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The primary mission? To provide vital health services to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL), ensuring that even those behind bars receive the care they deserve.

Among the many beneficiaries was Ryan, a PDL who couldn’t help but express his gratitude for the dental extraction service he received during the caravan. “I had been suffering from severe tooth pain for weeks, but thanks to the dental care provided, I can finally eat and sleep without discomfort,” Ryan shared, his relief evident.

Health Service Caravan

The health service caravan was a comprehensive endeavor, offering health consultations, basic medicines, first aid demonstrations, blood typing, and assessments of blood glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid levels. It also included BMI assessments, hygiene promotion, dental care, haircuts, oral hygiene promotion, and psychosocial support. Additionally, a bloodletting activity saw ICJMD and ICJFD personnel donating blood, showcasing their commitment to saving lives.

Genevie Amodia, RMT, Chapter Administrator of the Philippine Red Cross-Iligan City Chapter, emphasized the purpose of the activity: “Our goal is to address the immediate health needs of PDL and ensure they have access to basic health services. It’s about upholding human dignity and showing that health care is a right for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.”

For JO2 Ricky N Tabug, the unit Jail Nurse of ICJMD, the impact of the caravan on the PDL was undeniable. “The health service caravan has been a lifeline for many PDL, offering them much-needed medical attention and support. It not only improves their physical health but also boosts their morale, knowing that they are cared for,” he remarked.

The partnership efforts were lauded by JCINSP CARMELO A CORSAME, the city jail warden. “Collaboration with organizations like the Philippine Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross is crucial in addressing the health issues faced by PDL. Together, we can provide a holistic approach to their welfare and development,” Corsame said.

Both ICJMD and ICJFD have long been recognized for their robust welfare and development activities, focusing on the overall well-being of PDL. The facilities’ health initiatives, conducted in partnership with the Iligan City Health Office, Iligan Dental Society, and Motivation Philippines Inc., have made a significant difference in the lives of over 600 PDL.

This health service caravan is a testament to the power of collective efforts in making a positive impact on the lives of those who are often forgotten. For Ryan and many others, it was a reminder that their health and well-being matter, regardless of where they are.
