Social Media

(Social Media: “A tool to dehumanize people”)

TV host Joyce Pring trended on social media, bashed for saying non-believers will go to hell. But what’s the score?

Truth is most prized and beautiful when it is presented at face value. There’s no better way for the truth to be truth (potent, useful and beneficial as it can be) than by saying it as it is, notwithstanding the hurt and offense it may cause to others. Otherwise, it is not truth or the truth. (Revelation 21:8, Mathew 25:46, Matthew 13:50, 2 Thessalonians 1:9, Psalm 9:17).

Was the Messiah not crucified for proclaiming the truth? “So Pilate asked Jesus, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied.” – Luke 23:3

A church that doesn’t offend sinners is not a biblical church. Salvation starts with hurt and is born out of hurt/pain. Hence, the need for the Savior to suffer, be crucified and die first. There’s no resurrection without crucifixion. The apostle Paul preached the truth but the Jews took great offense and reacted in hostility, and did some atrocious things to the disciples (Acts 17:1-13). Joyce said nothing wrong.

Joyce PringIf you are not experiencing opposition from the unbelieving world (as a believer), then the devil might be walking side by side with you, with his arms around your shoulders, trouble-free. If your gospel does not disturb and disoblige pagans and the heathen, then what you have is not the Gospel of Christ, but of mere religion to propagate religion. It’s about relationship with the Great Creator, not theology or candy-coated “theory.”

A Christian is judgmental only when he/she points to a particular person as going to hell. Joyce judged no one. Believers don’t make themselves better when they proclaim spiritual truths. They just make non-believers see how damned they are without a Savior. God loves us (John 3:16), but God is not all love. He is also just. We brag as being the only Christian nation in Asia, yet we disdain the Gospel truth.

The Word hurts (Hebrews 4:12). It is meant to save souls and transform lives, not to tickle ears and promote dead religiosity. “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,’Brothers, what shall we do?” – Acts 2:37

In her article, “The Triumph and Failures of Social Media,” Joyce Pring asks, “How Does the Internet Impact Us?” She wrote, “… the digital world is just as dangerous as the real world – perhaps even more so since it can be a tool to dehumanize people.” It is one thing to be saved and another thing to be caved – in a virtual, addictive, deceptive world of social media.
