Umali aide slay suspect nabbed

SAN JOSE CITY – One of the alleged gunmen in the January 14, 2018 murder of Mary Anne Hernandez, personal secretary of then Gov. Czarina D. Umali, was nabbed during manhunt operations conducted here on Saturday.

Provincial police officer-in-charge Col. Marvin Joe C. Saro identified the arrested suspect as Ronald Magat, 30, single, delivery boy, of Zone 6, Sitio Raymundo, Bgy. Tondod, this city.

The suspect’s arrest was carried out by intel-warrant operatives of the local police led by city police head Lt. Col. Heryl Bruno and members of the 2nd provincial mobile force company at his hideout in Bgy. Canuto Ramos at 3:50 p.m.

Bruno said the arresting team implemented an arrest warrant issued against Magat on May 22, 2018 by Regional Trial Court Judge Eleonor Marbas-Vizcarra, of the Baloc, Sto. Domingo RTC Branch 89 with no bail recommended.

Records showed that Mary Anne’s husband, Carlito Hernandez, 45, who was wounded during the January 14 attack filed separate murder and frustrated charges against the six suspects including Magat and Jesus Pajarillo, former chief of the civilian security unit of then-former and now-Gov. Aurelio M. Umali.

Aside from the six, three other suspects identified as Anastacio Geron, Armando Geron, and Reynaldo Iglesia, all of Bgy. Tondod here, were also arrested and separately charged after they earlier confessed Pajarillo gave them P5,000 to serve as lookouts and tipsters.

Mary Anne, 38, was at the front passenger seat of their Isuzu MUX SUV driven by Carlito when they stopped to refuel at a Shell Gas Station in Bgy. Marcos District near their house in Talavera. The gunmen then approached them and fired shots, killing her on the spot and wounding her husband. Their two children seated at the back were unharmed.

The family just returned from a weekend vacation in Baguio City when the ambush occurred.
