Manila Vice Mayor Chi Atienza challenged the graduates to embrace their potential and dedicate their lives to a purpose greater than themselves.

In her inspiring address to the graduates of the Universidad de Manila (UDM) during its 27th Commencement Exercises held on Tuesday, July 29, Atienza shared her journey as a working student, actress and entrepreneur who experienced both success and failure, as she urged them to embrace a life not defined by personal gain, but by selfless service and dedication to a higher calling. Joining her in leading the ceremony was UdM President Dr. Felma Carlos-Tria.

“The secret to life really is to surrender your decisions, to surrender your ambition, and to give your life to the Lord and for the betterment of those around you. And if you follow that path, I can assure you 101% you will make it in life,” she said.

Tria said Atienza’s inspiring message serves as a source of hope and guidance for them to trust in their own potential and confidently face the challenges ahead.

Atienza highlighted that the challenges and obstacles faced along the way are not merely hurdles but essential for personal growth and preparedness.

“Looking back at my life, I know if the Lord did not put me in the paths where he led me, I would not be ready to face you today and to tell you na kung kaya ko, mas kaya niyo rin,” Atienza shared.

She stressed the idea of “believing in yourself even when uncertainty and fear are present,” adding that, “mahalagang malaman n’yong lahat na may saysay ang buhay ninyo—you are meant to make a difference.”
