The popular one-make Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series will make its Australian debut this weekend in South Australia at The Bend Motorsport Park for round two of Super Trofeo Asia, Zagame Autosport fielding experienced GT campaigners Dean Canto and Sam Brabham in the Sam Soo owned Huracán Super Trofeo Evo 2.
Managed by Zagame Autosport – Lamborghini distributors for Victorian and South Australia – the Silver/Silver categorised team will be competing in the PRO class this weekend, and are expected to be right in the outright fight despite the experienced field of international competitors.
Former Supercars driver and experienced GT competitor Dean Canto spearheads the team, the South Australian a regular at The Bend as one of the most experienced driver coaches in the country, whilst he will be joined by third generation driver Sam Brabham, grandson of three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jack Brabham. Whilst Brabham doesn’t enjoy the immense experience of his team-mate, he has been a regular GT competitor over the last few seasons and cannot be underestimated.
The pair will be guided by the experienced hand of Zagame Autosport’s Rod Wilson, a man who has a resume of motorsport experience rivalled by few in Australia, and whilst Wilson explains that at this stage, the team’s appearance in Super Trofeo Asia is a one-off, that they are very much looking to this weekend as another step in the Zagame Autosport program that can take customers from owning a GT race car all the way through to competing on the world stage.
“The debut of Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia in Australia provides a very unique opportunity, something which we were determined to be a part of,” Wilson explained.
“At Zagame Autosport we manage in excess of 20 race-ready GT cars as part of prestige marques sold under the Zagame Automotive Group banner in Victoria and South Australia, in a program that provides a complete arrive-and-drive platform for clients that purchase race cars. On top of that we provide storage, track preparation services and track support – including coaching – so a full raft of experiences just designed around track days, but for those owners that want to go the next step, this is part of that process.
“Zagame Autosport have sold a number of Huracán Super Trofeos within Australia, including the one owned by Sam Soo which will be campaigned this weekend, so when the Series announced its Australian debut, we were determined to be on the grid, but apart from just adding to the quality field of Asian teams, we also wanted to be in the outright fight!”
Teams arrive at The Bend Motorsport Park on Thursday, with many of them seeing the world-class facility for the first time, and with just two 60-minute official practice sessions on Friday to acclimatise themselves ahead of qualifying on Saturday morning, they will have their work cut out for them as the Zagame Autosport team take advantage of their many miles around the 4.95-kilometre International Circuit.
Saturday afternoon (2:20pm local time) will see the opening 50-minute race, with both drivers sharing the driving duties (compulsory mid-race pit stops for driver changes occur in every Super Trofeo event), whilst the reverse driving order will prevail for Sunday’s second 50-minute race scheduled for 11:20am.
