Top Performing Schools of Valenzuela Reading Camp Recognized in Valenzuela Education Summit

Five schools emerged as top performing schools of the recently concluded Valenzuela Reading Camp 2022 that was relaunched after two years of hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Valenzuela City Mayor WES Gatchalian and Department of Education (DepEDd) – Valenzuela recognized and rewarded these public elementary schools during the Valenzuela Education Summit 2022 at WES Arena, September 24.

Valenzuela Reading Camp 2022 is a ten-day half-day session for non-readers and frustrated level readers that aims to address and improve the reading comprehension of grade school students.

In the assessment conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd) Valenzuela, the two years of pandemic has recorded 808 non-readers and 7,873 frustrated level readers from grade three to grade six students through the Philippine Individual Reading Test (Phil-IRI). These students got an average score of 79.89% on the pre-assessment test.

To gauge the students’ improvement after the Summer Reading Camp 2022, a post-assessment tool that was provided by the Synergeia Foundation was endorsed to students. A mean score of 91.98% was obtain from the post-test. This made a 15.13% improvement in the overall score of the 42 public elementary schools.

The five public elementary schools that exhibited exemplary performance based on the post-assessment test are Parada Elementary School, Arcadio F. Deato Elementary School, Pasolo Elementary School, San Miguel Heights Elementary School, and Roberta de Jesus Elementary School.

Parada Elementary School made the biggest increment of 50.38% from the pre-test of 61.70% to the post-test of 92.79%. This showed that Parada Elementary students significantly improved their reading performance after the Reading Camp.

Placing second is Arcadio F. Deato Elementary School which listed a 42.23% change between their pre-test and post-test. While Pasolo Elementary School, third on the list, registered a 31.36% increment. About 28.17% change was garnered by San Miguel Heights Elementary School on their assessment tests securing them the fourth spot. Meanwhile, Roberta de Jesus Elementary School on the top 5 made a 26.23% change from pre-test to post-test.

Mayor WES rewarded the performing schools with a Desktop Computer as the City’s compensation for their overall performance.

However, there were some schools on the average, students did not improve their reading performance. Dalandanan Elementary School, Paso de Blas Elementary School, and Silvestre Lazaro Elementary School were on the list.

Joining Mayor WES Gatchalian and Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Meliton Zurbano were Education 360 Degrees Investment Program Director Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad Borja, Action Officer Rovin Feliciano, Valenzuela City’s Valued Partner in Education, the Synergeia Foundation headed by Dr. Nene Guevarra, Councilor Niña Lopez, and Liga ng mga Barangay President Jon Jon Bartolome.

Also present in the event were representatives from the Business Sectors, Parents-Teachers Association, Solo Parents Group, Senior Citizens Association, SPED Parents, Principals, Teachers, Students, and Stakeholders.

Reading Camp is part of the Education 360 Degrees Investment Program, the holistic, comprehensive, and student-centric approach to uplift the quality of education in the City. It was launched in summer of 2014 and the beneficiaries of the said camp since it started are now close to 100 thousand students.

Education Summit 2022, on the other hand, is an initiative of the local government under the new leadership of Mayor WES Gatchalian to discuss and outline effective programs and projects that will address the emerging growing needs of the City’s public education.
