Azkals to play in China

THE Philippines will play its remaining fixtures in the FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup preliminary joint qualification in China, which will be hosting Group A in June.

The Azkals’ remaining Group A matches were originally scheduled for the March and June international match windows, but the coronavirus wiped out last year’s schedule.

The Philippines will take on Guam on June 3 and China on June 7 before wrapping up its assignments against Maldives on June 15.

The Azkals are hoping to become one of the 16 teams to advance in the final round of the World Cup qualifiers, by being among the four best second placed teams in case it could not top the group. The Philippines is also seeking to gain qualification in the AFC Asian Cup to be held in China in 2023.

Sitting in third spot in the Group A table with seven points, the Azkals are actually level with Chinese, but they were trailing in goal difference.

The Syrians leads the group with a maximum of 15 points. Maldives is running fourth with six points while Guam remains without a point and is already eliminated in the race.

The Philippines last played on Nov. 19, 2019, absorbing a 0-1 loss to Syria at the Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
