The newly-elected officers of the Airport Press Club (APC) took their oath of office last October 6 before Cebu Pacific President and CEO Lance Gokongwei, with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime “JJB” Bautista and Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Cesar Chiong in attendance.

Sworn in were Ariel Fernandez of the Manila Bulletin as the newly-elected APC President.

Itchie G. Cabayan of Journal Online, Peoples Tonight and Publiko was inducted as vice president; Christina Arayata of Philippine News Agency (PNA), secretary, Froilan Morallos of Pilipino Mirror, treasurer and Rudy Santos of the Philippine Star as chairman of the board.

Others who also took their oaths were Butch Quejada of Pilipino Star, chairman for membership; Jimmy Cheng Of United News, chairman for external affairs and Directors Bing Jabadan of The Daily Manila Shimbun, Cherry Ilaw, DZAR-SMNI; Anthony Ching, Daily Tribune; Benjie Vergara, Manila Times; Tony Gildo, DZME; Joel Zurbano, Manila Standard;, Jojo Sadiwa, Police Files; Joyce Adra, DZXL; Sam Nielsen, GMA-DZBB; Osias Osorio, Abante; Nonilon Reyes, Business Mirror; Jerry Tan, People’s Tonight Online /Police Files Tonite and June Simon, Bulgar.

The officers and members of the Airport Press Club thanked Gokongwei, Bautista, Chiong, MIAA assistant general manager Bryan Co and public affairs officer Connie Bungag and NAIA-Customs District Collector Mimel Talusan for gracing the occasion.

The Airport Press Club was established way back in 1963 by Jose C. de Venecia, Jr., or “Manong Joe”, who used to cover the airport for the Manila Times before he entered politics and later became the Speaker of the House of Representatives. After him, it was Maning Silva of Daily Express who took over the post, followed by Louie Perez from Manila Bulletin.

It is the oldest legitimate press corps in the airport beat and currently has 20 active members from various mainstream media outlets consisting of print, broadcast and online news companies.
