After their successfully build and operation of the Mactan Cebu International Airport which has won numerous global awards, Megawide has recently won the revelopment of Carbon Market in Cebu.
The Carbon Market is the oldest and largest farmer’s market in Cebu City. Megawide recently won the proposed P5.5 billion redevelopment to transform Carbon Market into a new future design landmark.
Brother of Gov. Gwen Garcia
As mandated under the law, there was a Swiss challenge which the brother of Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, Winston Garcia’s Cebu CFI Community Cooperative tried to challenge by submitting their 50,000 deposit however failing to submit all the other necessary documents according to City Administrator Floro Casas Jr., who also sits as chairman of the Joint Venture Selection Committee (JVSC).
After losing for failure to submit the required requirements, Winston Garcia’s Cebu CFI Community Cooperative has been up in arms trying to block the project even threatening to file legal cases to stop Megawide from starting the construction and redevelopment which is crucial as it will provide thousands of immediate jobs especially due to the high joblessness caused by the pandemic.
Vendors consulted; Fears addressed by Megawide
During the signing between Cebu City and Megawide, it was announced that Megawide consulted the vendors in their planned rehabilitation. They further assured the following:
- No displacement of vendors
- No Increase in rates for a certain period
- Market will still be regulated by City
- World class design and facilities celebrating Cebuano heritage
Urgent need to start
Based on the contract, the redevelopment will start this March without displacing the current vendors. This will take advantage of the decrease in tourists as well as prepare for the influx once the country is reopened in full to tourism.
“The project’s timing can not be more fortunate. With thousands of OFW’s being sent back to the Philippines especially in the construction industry to the global pandemics, the jobless rate has gone up. Large infrastructure projects such as this are giving much needed jobs to our fellow filipinos,” Ram Base, lead convenor of OFW Movement, stated.
