Peacekeeper held for shooting student dead

GENERAL TINIO, Nueva Ecija —The chief of the barangay peace-keeping force here was nabbed after shooting dead a Grade 11 student who had hit him with a shovel here on Saturday night.

Police identified the slain student as Joshua Esporna, 18, single, and the arrested barangay tanod chief as Valente Reyes, 63, both of Bgy. Pias, this town.

Investigation showed the shooting occurred in front of the house under construction owned by Arnold Del Valle at 9:30 p.m. here.

Probers said the suspect’s group was conducting routinary patrol in the area when they chanced upon the victim and another man having a fistfight in front of Del Valle’s house.

The suspect tried to pacify the duo but the victim was able to grab a shovel and hit the chief tanod in the head.

At this juncture, the suspect drew his gun and shot the victim point-blank in the forehead.

Police Chief Master Sgt. Michael Sarangaya, case prober said responding lawmen rushed the victim to the Medicare Community Hospital here but the latter was declared dead-on-arrival by attending physician Dr. Rodrigo Chan.

The suspect voluntarily surrendered to the police with thr cal.9mm pistol he used in the shooting.

Police said homicide charges were filed against the suspect before the prosecutor’s office.
